Stargate (1994)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

An interstellar teleportation device, found in Egypt, leads to a planet with humans resembling ancient Egyptians who worship the god Ra.

The Quartile Take

Stargate has a genuinely distinctive high concept — ancient Egyptian mythology fused with hard sci-fi teleportation — that felt singular and inventive for its time, earning strong Novelty marks. The plot is functional and entertaining but relies on fairly predictable beats once the setup is established. Acting is mixed: James Spader is earnest but awkward, Kurt Russell is underused and wooden for much of the runtime, and supporting performances are uneven. Visually the film has some striking desert vistas and impressive production design for its budget, but Roland Emmerich's direction is workmanlike rather than cinematic. The ending is a fairly routine action climax with a convenient nuclear resolution that deflates tension rather than satisfying it, feeling rushed and formulaic.
