Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating
Three generations of women deal with family secrets while surviving the east wind, fire, insanity, superstition, lies and even death.
Volver showcases Almodóvar at his most personal and emotionally rich. Penélope Cruz delivers a career-defining performance, anchoring a film full of warmth, dark humor, and deeply felt female solidarity. The storytelling weaves melodrama, magical realism, and dark secrets with a distinctly Spanish sensibility that feels utterly singular — only Almodóvar could have made this film. The cinematography is warm and expressive but not visually groundbreaking. The plot, while engaging and emotionally resonant, relies on some convenient coincidences and its mysteries unravel somewhat predictably. The ending is satisfying and emotionally earned but not transcendent, closing neatly rather than leaving a lasting sting.
