The eruption of the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull causes major disruptions to travelers' plans around the world. For Alain and Valérie, it's a catastrophe. Because to make it to the small Greek village in time for their daughter's wedding, this divorced couple, whose mutual hatred knows no bounds, will be obliged to set out on the road together.
The Volcano is a fairly formulaic French road comedy built on the well-worn premise of feuding exes forced together by circumstance. The Eyjafjallajökull eruption provides a novel backdrop but the script leans heavily on predictable bickering-to-reconciliation beats. Acting from Dany Boon and Valérie Bonneton carries the film beyond its thin material, with decent comic chemistry, though the cinematography is unremarkable for a road movie crossing Europe. The ending resolves neatly but unsurprisingly, and the overall conception doesn't distinguish itself from dozens of similar mismatched-couple comedies.
