Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Bernie and Joan are two fiery flirters who are passionate about everything from hookups to breakups and each other. When he sets up his best friend, Danny, with her roommate, Debbie, the sparks soon fly as they try to navigate the relationship minefields from the bar to the bedroom and are eventually put to the test in the real world.

The Quartile Take

This 2014 remake of the 1986 film (itself based on David Mamet's play) offers a solid but unremarkable romantic comedy experience. The dual-couple structure gives it some narrative depth compared to typical romcoms, and the cast—particularly Kevin Hart and Regina Hall as Bernie and Joan—brings genuine comedic energy that elevates the material. However, as a remake of an already-adapted work, it brings little new to the genre and follows a predictable relationship arc. The cinematography is standard studio romcom fare with nothing visually distinctive. The ending wraps things up competently but without surprise. Hart and Hall steal the film while the central couple feels comparatively bland.
