Youth in Revolt (2009)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

As a fan of Albert Camus and Jean-Luc Godard, teenage Nick Twisp is definitely out of his element when his mother and her boyfriend move the family to a trailer park. When a pretty neighbor named Sheeni plays records by French crooners, it's love at first sight for frustrated and inexperienced Nick. Learning that she is dating someone, Nick launches a hilarious quest to find his way into Sheeni's heart -- and bed.

The Quartile Take

Youth in Revolt is a moderately charming coming-of-age comedy elevated by Michael Cera's dual-role performance as Nick and his anarchic alter ego Franc, giving the film a quirky personality that sets it apart from generic teen romcoms. The plot, adapted from C.D. Payne's cult novel, has witty episodic energy but loses momentum and coherence as it progresses, feeling scattershot rather than purposeful. Cinematography is competent with some playful stylistic flourishes (animation inserts, split-screen moments) that add texture without being truly distinctive. The alter-ego conceit and literary-minded teen protagonist give it genuine novelty within its genre, though the execution doesn't fully realize the source material's subversive potential. The ending feels rushed and somewhat unsatisfying, failing to deliver a strong payoff for Nick and Sheeni's relationship or his arc of self-discovery.
