Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating
A New York suburban couple's marriage goes dangerously awry when the wife indulges in an adulterous fling.
Unfaithful is elevated primarily by its performances, especially Diane Lane's Oscar-nominated turn conveying guilt, desire, and shame with remarkable nuance, and Richard Gere providing quiet intensity. Adrian Lyne brings his trademark erotic thriller sensibility competently, but the film treads familiar ground thematically—infidelity dramas have been well-explored. The cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable. The ending is deliberately ambiguous and morally unresolved, which suits the tone but may frustrate some viewers. Overall a well-crafted but somewhat conventional entry in the erotic thriller genre.
