The Nut Job (2014)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

Surly, a curmudgeon, independent squirrel is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. Lucky for him, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of park community, as they gear up for winter - Maury's Nut Store.

The Quartile Take

The Nut Job is a fairly generic animated heist-comedy that fails to distinguish itself in any meaningful way. The plot is a formulaic caper with predictable beats and underdeveloped characters. Voice acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with no standout performances elevating the material. The animation is competent but bland, lacking the visual ambition or artistry of stronger animated fare. The heist-meets-talking-animals concept offers little novelty, feeling like a derivative mashup of better films. The ending wraps up predictably with no satisfying payoff. Overall it sits squarely in below-average territory across the board.
