Good Hair (2009)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

An exposé of comic proportions that only Chris Rock could pull off, GOOD HAIR visits beauty salons and hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples to explore the way hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of the black community.

The Quartile Take

Good Hair is a genuinely singular documentary — Chris Rock's personal, comedic lens on Black hair culture is distinctly his own, blending cultural critique with laugh-out-loud moments that no other filmmaker would have approached quite this way. The subject matter itself is underexplored and the film illuminates real economic and social dimensions (sodium hydroxide chemistry, the Indian temple hair trade) that are eye-opening. However, the structure is somewhat loose and episodic rather than tightly plotted, the cinematography is functional TV-doc level, and the ending doesn't land with particular impact or resolution — it winds down more than it concludes.
