Evil pirate Burger Beard is in search of the final page of a magical book that makes any evil plan he writes in it come true, but the final page happens to be the Krabby Patty secret formula. When Burger Beard endangers Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs, Squidward, Sandy, and Plankton must embark on a quest to retrieve the recipe and save their city...a quest that takes them to the surface world and transforms them into superheroes.

The Quartile Take

Sponge Out of Water is a competent but somewhat unfocused sequel that leans heavily on the charm of its TV source material. The plot is thin and meandering — the apocalyptic Bikini Bottom and superhero transformation feel like disconnected set pieces rather than a cohesive story. The voice cast delivers their usual spirited performances, keeping the energy high. The mixed 2D/3D animation and live-action integration is visually inventive and gives the film a distinctive look, though it doesn't fully deliver on its premise. The superhero angle offers some novelty for the franchise but borrows liberally from familiar tropes. The ending feels rushed and anticlimactic, wrapping things up too conveniently without much earned emotional payoff.
