Molly Mahoney is the awkward and insecure manager of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium—the strangest, most fantastic and most wonderful toy store in the world. After Mr. Magorium bequeaths the store to her, a dark and ominous change begins to take over the once-remarkable Emporium.
Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is a visually inventive family fantasy with charming production design and a whimsical premise, but it struggles under a thin, meandering plot that never quite fulfills its magical potential. The performances from Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman are likable if eccentric, carrying scenes that the script fails to support adequately. The cinematography leans into colorful, candy-coated visuals that suit the tone without being particularly distinctive. The film has a singular voice and enough oddball charm to distinguish it from standard family fare, though the concept slightly exceeds the execution. The ending feels emotionally underdeveloped, softening what could have been a genuinely poignant meditation on mortality and transition into something overly safe and unearned.
