The Quartile Take

It's Complicated is a polished, crowd-pleasing romantic comedy elevated by a strong cast—Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin all deliver charming, naturalistic performances—but the film operates comfortably within well-worn genre territory. The love-triangle premise involving an ex-husband affair feels familiar, and Nancy Meyers' signature aesthetic (aspirational kitchens, beautiful Santa Barbara homes) is visually warm but cinematographically unremarkable. The ending resolves predictably, giving audiences exactly what they expect without much surprise. Novelty is low: this is a competently executed but thoroughly conventional rom-com, with little to distinguish it beyond its older demographic focus. Acting is the genuine bright spot, keeping it above average across the board.
