Set in the 1920s French Riviera, a master magician is commissioned to try and expose a psychic as a fraud.
A charming if lightweight Woody Allen romantic comedy set against gorgeous Provence and Riviera locations, which the cinematography captures beautifully. The premise is clever and the period setting is well-realized, but the plot leans heavily on Allen's familiar rationalist-vs-romantic tension formula. Colin Firth and Emma Stone are watchable though their chemistry feels strained, and the age gap between leads goes largely unaddressed. The ending resolves too neatly and unconvincingly, with the protagonist's ideological about-face feeling rushed and unearned.
