A 14th century Crusader returns with his comrade to a homeland devastated by the Black Plague. The Church commands the two knights to transport a witch to a remote abbey, where monks will perform a ritual in hopes of ending the pestilence.
Season of the Witch is a mediocre medieval fantasy-adventure that squanders an intriguing premise. The plot is predictable and formulaic, following a well-worn 'escort mission' structure with telegraphed twists and weak character development. Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman deliver their typically eccentric but uneven performances, not particularly suited to the period setting. The cinematography offers some atmospheric medieval visuals and decent production design, providing modest visual interest. Novelty is low — the film blends Crusader-era settings with demonic horror in an uninspired, derivative way that never finds a distinctive voice. The ending devolves into a generic supernatural action climax that undermines whatever tension was built, feeling rushed and unsatisfying. Overall a forgettable genre entry that fails to capitalize on its setting or concept.
