My Life in Ruins (2009)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A Greek tour guide named Georgia attempts to recapture her kefi (Greek for mojo) by guiding a ragtag group of tourists around Greece and showing them the beauty of her native land. Along the way, she manages to open their eyes to the wonders of an exotic foreign land while beginning to see the world through a new set of eyes in the process.

The Quartile Take

My Life in Ruins is a formulaic romantic comedy that follows well-worn conventions: the uptight professional who rediscovers joy, the ragtag group of lovable misfits, and the predictable romance with the charming stranger. The Greek scenery provides some visual appeal and the cinematography captures the landscapes competently, but the film offers little that distinguishes it from countless other European-backdrop romcoms. The acting is serviceable but unremarkable, with Nia Vardalos essentially retreading familiar ground from My Big Fat Greek Wedding without the same charm or originality. The ensemble of tourist stereotypes feels lazy rather than endearing, and the ending arrives exactly as expected with no surprises.
