A mysterious virus hits an isolated elementary school, transforming the kids into a feral swarm of mass savages. An unlikely hero must lead a motley band of teachers in the fight of their lives.
Cooties takes a gleefully mean-spirited premise — zombie kids terrorizing teachers — and wrings decent dark comedy from it, bolstered by a solid cast (Elijah Wood, Rainn Wilson, Alison Pill) who commit enthusiastically. The concept is fun and the tone is knowingly absurd, giving it a degree of novelty within the zom-com space. However, the plot is thin and formulaic once the initial premise is established, following a predictable siege structure without much invention. Cinematography is serviceable but unremarkable for the genre. The ending feels rushed and unsatisfying, leaning on a stinger rather than delivering a proper payoff. A cult curio that's more fun in concept than execution.
