The Inbetweeners 2 (2014)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Neil, Will and Simon receive an invite from Jay to join him in Australia whilst on his gap year, who promises them it’s ”the sex capital of the world”. With their lives now rather dull compared to their hedonistic school days and legendary lads holiday, it’s an offer they can’t refuse. Once again, they put growing up temporarily on-hold, and embark on a backpacking holiday of a lifetime in an awful car, inspired by Peter Andre’s ‘Mysterious Girl’. Will soon finds himself battling with the lads to do something cultural, whilst they focus their attention on drinking, girls, and annoying fellow travelers.

The Quartile Take

The Inbetweeners 2 follows the well-worn template of the first film and the TV series, transplanting the lads' misadventures to Australia with predictable results. The plot is formulaic — fish-out-of-water antics, failed romantic pursuits, gross-out set pieces — offering little narrative surprise. The four leads (Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas) remain reliably committed to their characters and deliver the comedic timing the franchise is known for, keeping acting above average. Cinematography is serviceable at best; the Australian setting provides some scenic backdrop but is rarely exploited cinematically. Novelty is low — this is very much a by-the-numbers sequel recycling the same dynamic and joke structure as the first film and the series, with Australia substituting for Malia. The ending wraps things up tidily but without much emotional resonance or originality, feeling like a slightly tired farewell to characters whose story had already been told.
