Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

Batman works desperately to find a bomb planted by the Joker while Amanda Waller sends her newly-formed Suicide Squad to break into Arkham Asylum and recover vital information stolen by the Riddler.

The Quartile Take

Batman: Assault on Arkham is a solid DC animated film that smartly reframes the story around the Suicide Squad rather than Batman, giving it a fresher ensemble dynamic than typical superhero fare. The plot is well-structured with heist mechanics layered over the Arkham setting, and the voice cast delivers competent, energetic performances. Cinematography is functional and stylish for animation of its budget tier. Novelty gets a bump for centering morally grey antiheroes in a Batman universe well before the live-action Suicide Squad films, though it works within established DC animated conventions. The ending ties threads together satisfyingly without being particularly surprising. A consistently above-average animated film across the board with no single category standing out as truly exceptional.
