Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

When Darren Shan is taken to a circus that's chock-full of sideshow oddities, he meets a vampire and receives a life-changing bite on the neck.

The Quartile Take

Cirque du Freak is a moderately entertaining YA fantasy adaptation that never quite fulfills its quirky premise. The plot is serviceable but rushed and tonally inconsistent, cramming exposition from multiple novels without satisfying payoff. The ensemble cast (John C. Reilly, Ken Watanabe, Salma Hayek) brings genuine energy and lifts the material above its script limitations. The cinematography captures the carnival atmosphere reasonably well with some imaginative production design. The concept of a vampire-run freakshow with feuding factions is distinctive enough to register as novel within its genre. The ending, however, feels abrupt and unsatisfying, clearly setting up a sequel franchise that never materialized, leaving the story unresolved.
