Did You Hear About the Morgans? (2009)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

New Yorkers Paul and Meryl Morgan seem to have it all -- except that their marriage is crumbling around them. But their romantic woes are small compared to the trouble they find themselves in after witnessing a murder. To protect them from an assassin, federal agents whisk away Paul and Meryl to a small town in Wyoming, where their marriage will crash and burn, or their passion will reignite.

The Quartile Take

Did You Hear About the Morgans? is a formulaic romantic comedy that hits every predictable beat of the fish-out-of-water and rekindled-romance genres without distinction. The witness protection premise offers mild comic potential but is squandered with generic culture-clash jokes and an entirely predictable marital reconciliation arc. Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker deliver serviceable but uninspired performances that feel like retreads of their established screen personas. The cinematography is competent but purely functional, with no visual identity to speak of. The film brings nothing new to the genre — its blend of NYC sophistication versus rural Wyoming charm is paint-by-numbers, and the ending resolves exactly as anticipated from the opening scene. A thoroughly mediocre entry in the rom-com canon.
