An immature, newly unemployed comic must navigate the murky waters of adulthood after her fling with a graduate student results in an unplanned pregnancy.
Obvious Child earns its reputation as a frank, disarming indie rom-com largely on the strength of Jenny Slate's deeply felt, naturalistic performance and its genuinely bold willingness to treat abortion with candor and even humor — rare and distinctive enough to merit high Novelty. The plot is relatively slight and episodic, characteristic of the micro-budget indie form, and the cinematography is functional but unremarkable. The ending resolves warmly but without particular surprise. Acting is the clear standout, with Slate anchoring every scene with vulnerability and wit.
