The Bourne Supremacy (2004)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

A CIA operation to purchase classified Russian documents is blown by a rival agent, who then shows up in the sleepy seaside village where Bourne and Marie have been living. The pair run for their lives and Bourne, who promised retaliation should anyone from his former life attempt contact, is forced to once again take up his life as a trained assassin to survive.

The Quartile Take

The Bourne Supremacy is a solid, propulsive thriller sequel that deepens Jason Bourne's emotional journey but follows a largely familiar espionage chase formula. Paul Greengrass's handheld, kinetic cinematography is genuinely distinctive and influential — the shakycam style here felt urgent and visceral in a way that redefined action filmmaking aesthetics. The plot is competent but fairly derivative sequel territory, escalating stakes without surprising. Damon delivers a reliably stoic performance and the supporting cast is capable. The Moscow car chase is a highlight. The ending adds emotional weight via Bourne's confrontation with his past victim's daughter, elevating what could have been a generic conclusion, though it doesn't fully transcend the formula.
