Before horror enthusiast Max can break things off with his girlfriend Evelyn she dies in a bus accident. In time, Max meets another woman only to have Evelyn resurface as a zombie ready to resume their relationship.
Burying the Ex is a lightweight horror-comedy with a mildly amusing premise—zombie girlfriend as metaphor for a toxic relationship—but it fails to fully capitalize on it. The plot is thin and predictable, hitting familiar rom-zom-com beats without much surprise. Joe Dante's direction brings some genre affection but the script is underdeveloped. Acting is serviceable; Anton Yelchin brings charm and Ashley Greene commits to the role, elevating middling material. Cinematography is functional at best—competent but unremarkable for the genre. Novelty is low; the zombie ex-girlfriend concept had been explored more effectively elsewhere (Warm Bodies, etc.) and this entry feels derivative rather than distinctive. The ending resolves things tidily but without any real payoff or cleverness.
