The Quartile Take

Baahubali: The Beginning is a landmark in Indian cinema for its sheer scale and ambition. The cinematography and visual world-building are genuinely exceptional — sweeping landscapes, grand battle sequences, and waterfall vistas that rival Hollywood epics on a fraction of the budget. Its novelty is high: no Indian film had attempted this kind of mythological-epic fantasy spectacle at this scale with this execution, making it a singular cultural event. The plot is serviceable but episodic and somewhat formulaic in its hero-rising structure, hitting familiar mythological beats without much surprise. Acting is competent and energetic, with Prabhas and Rana Daggubati delivering physical presence, though characterization is broad. The ending is the film's biggest weakness — it's a deliberate cliffhanger designed to set up Part 2, leaving the central conflict entirely unresolved, which is frustrating as a standalone experience.
