Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Quartile rating: 7.5/10 · 1 rating

In 1926, Newt Scamander arrives at the Magical Congress of the United States of America with a magically expanded briefcase, which houses a number of dangerous creatures and their habitats. When the creatures escape from the briefcase, it sends the American wizarding authorities after Newt, and threatens to strain even further the state of magical and non-magical relations.

The Quartile Take

Fantastic Beasts offers a charming expansion of the Wizarding World into 1920s New York, with imaginative creature design and a likable lead in Eddie Redmayne. The plot is serviceable but somewhat scattered, juggling the creature-retrieval adventure with a heavier subplot involving an Obscurus that feels tonally mismatched. Acting is competent across the board without being outstanding. Cinematography captures the period atmosphere reasonably well but rarely rises to truly memorable imagery. Novelty is moderate — the 1920s American setting is a fresh angle for the franchise, though the spin-off structure feels safe. The ending, in particular, is the weakest link: the villain reveal (Grindelwald) feels shoehorned and sets up sequels at the expense of a satisfying standalone conclusion.
