5 to 7 (2014)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A young writer begins an affair with an older woman from France whose open marriage to a diplomat dictates that they can meet only between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Quartile Take

5 to 7 is a charming, literate romantic drama with a Woody Allen-esque New York sensibility. The premise of a structured extramarital affair within a French open-marriage framework gives it a pleasantly distinctive flavor, and the performances from Anton Yelchin and Bérénice Marlohe are warm and engaging. However, the plot follows fairly predictable romantic drama beats, and the ending feels somewhat anticlimactic and unearned. Cinematography is competent but unremarkable. A modest, enjoyable film that doesn't quite transcend its genre.
