Cars 3 (2017)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns.

The Quartile Take

Cars 3 is a competent but uneven Pixar sequel that attempts a more serious, introspective tone than its predecessors — McQueen grappling with aging and obsolescence gives it more emotional weight than Cars 2. The plot borrows heavily from sports-comeback formulas and the mentor-student dynamic is familiar, keeping Novelty low. Voice acting is solid across the board without being remarkable. The animation and cinematography are visually polished with some genuinely impressive racing sequences, though nothing groundbreaking for Pixar. The ending earns modest credit for subverting expectations by centering Cruz Ramirez's triumph rather than McQueen's — a modestly fresh resolution that elevates the film's themes about legacy and passing the torch. Overall a mid-tier Pixar effort that improves on Cars 2 but never reaches the franchise's full potential.
