Buck Russell, a lovable but slovenly bachelor, suddenly becomes the temporary caretaker of his nephew and nieces after a family emergency. His freewheeling attitude soon causes tension with his older niece Tia, loyal girlfriend Chanice, and just about everyone else who crosses his path.
Uncle Buck is a charming John Hughes comedy elevated by John Candy's genuinely warm and funny lead performance. The plot is familiar — irresponsible adult learns responsibility through kids — but Hughes executes it with enough heart and specific comic set pieces (the giant pancakes, the clown confrontation) to feel distinctive. Candy is the film's engine and carries scenes that would otherwise feel routine. Cinematography is functional suburban comedy fare with nothing notable. The ending is satisfying but predictable, wrapping up the Tia subplot neatly. Novelty gets a modest bump for Candy's irreplaceable screen presence giving the film a singular warmth, though the premise itself is well-worn.
