A successful businessman falls in love with the girl of his dreams. There's one big complication though; he's fallen hook, line and sinker for a mermaid.
Splash is a charming and warmly received romantic fantasy comedy that blends mermaid mythology with 1980s New York City charm. The plot is a fairly standard romantic setup elevated by its fantasy conceit and good-natured execution. Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah deliver likable, chemistry-filled performances that carry the film, though neither is particularly showstopping. Cinematography is serviceable and functional for the era without much visual ambition. Novelty is modest — while the mermaid-in-NYC premise was fairly fresh at the time, it follows a conventional romantic comedy structure. The ending is satisfying if predictable, resolving sweetly but not memorably.
