Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny (2016)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

A story of lost love, young love, a legendary sword and one last opportunity at redemption.

The Quartile Take

This Netflix sequel to the beloved original fails to recapture what made Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon special. The plot is a formulaic retread covering familiar wuxia ground — lost love, redemption arcs, a legendary weapon — without the emotional depth or character complexity of its predecessor. The acting is serviceable but lacks the gravitas of the original cast, with English-language dialogue feeling stiff and disconnected from the genre's roots. Cinematography has some visually appealing wire-fu sequences and scenic backdrops, but nothing approaching the artistry of Yuen Woo-ping and Christopher Doyle's original collaboration. As a sequel it offers little new — it recycles the themes, aesthetic, and story beats of the 2000 film without meaningfully expanding the world or offering a fresh perspective. The ending feels rushed and emotionally unearned, unable to deliver the resonant conclusion the story builds toward.
