Two Weeks Notice (2002)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

Dedicated environmental lawyer Lucy Kelson goes to work for billionaire George Wade as part of a deal to preserve a community center. Indecisive and weak-willed George grows dependent on Lucy's guidance on everything from legal matters to clothing. Exasperated, Lucy gives notice and picks Harvard graduate June Carter as her replacement. As Lucy's time at the firm nears an end, she grows jealous of June and has second thoughts about leaving George.

The Quartile Take

Two Weeks Notice is a likable but thoroughly formulaic romcom that hits every expected beat: mismatched leads, slow-burn attraction, jealousy catalyst, and a last-minute reconciliation. Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant share genuine chemistry and carry the film well above its script's limitations — their easy comic timing elevates what is otherwise a fairly thin will-they-won't-they setup. Cinematography is functional New York location work, pleasant but unremarkable. Novelty is low — the billionaire-meets-idealist premise and the employer-employee slow burn are well-worn genre territory, and the film brings little that distinguishes it beyond its two leads. The ending delivers the expected payoff competently without surprising anyone.
