Agora (2009)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A historical drama set in Roman Egypt, concerning philosopher Hypatia of Alexandria and her relationship with her slave Davus, who is torn between his love for her and the possibility of gaining his freedom by joining the rising tide of Christianity.

The Quartile Take

Agora is a visually ambitious historical epic that earns praise for its sweeping cinematography, including striking aerial shots of Alexandria that emphasize humanity's smallness against the cosmos. The story of Hypatia is genuinely underexplored in cinema, giving it some novelty, but the script leans heavily on broad strokes — the Christians are largely villainous, the Romans conflicted, and the slave Davus caught in a melodramatic triangle that never fully convinces. Acting is solid but rarely transcendent; Rachel Weisz anchors the film with dignity though the supporting cast is uneven. The ending, while historically accurate, is bleak and abrupt in a way that feels more deflating than cathartic or resonant, leaving emotional threads unresolved rather than powerfully concluded.
