Wild Card (2015)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

When a Las Vegas bodyguard with lethal skills and a gambling problem gets in trouble with the mob, he has one last play… and it's all or nothing.

The Quartile Take

Wild Card is a formulaic Vegas crime thriller that fails to distinguish itself despite Statham's charismatic presence. The plot is thin and predictable, recycling tired mob-trouble and gambling-addiction tropes from the original Burt Reynolds film Heat. Statham elevates the material somewhat with genuine physicality and screen presence, but the supporting cast is underutilized. Cinematography is workmanlike with nothing visually memorable. As a remake of a modest original, novelty is low — the Las Vegas setting offers little fresh perspective. The ending is anticlimactic and unsatisfying, failing to deliver on the film's modest dramatic promises.
