Korengal picks up where Restrepo left off; the same men, the same valley, the same commanders, but a very different look at the experience of war.
Korengal is a follow-up documentary to the acclaimed Restrepo, revisiting the same soldiers and the Korengal Valley in Afghanistan. While it offers candid, deeply human reflections on combat and brotherhood, it inevitably feels like a companion piece rather than a standalone work — its novelty is constrained by its derivative relationship to Restrepo. The cinematography captures raw, authentic footage but doesn't surpass what was already seen in the original. The 'acting' (interview subjects) is sincere and affecting, with soldiers speaking honestly about trauma and camaraderie. The ending lacks the emotional resolution of Restrepo and feels somewhat inconclusive. Overall a worthwhile but secondary war documentary.
