But when a deformed madman known as 'The Joker' seizes control of Gotham's criminal underworld, Batman must face his most ruthless nemesis ever while protecting both his identity and his love interest, reporter Vicki Vale.

The Quartile Take

Tim Burton's Batman is a landmark superhero film that redefined the genre with its gothic, expressionist aesthetic and operatic tone. Jack Nicholson's Joker is a magnetic, scene-stealing performance that anchors the film, while Michael Keaton's brooding Bruce Wayne subverted expectations brilliantly. Burton's dark, stylized Gotham — influenced by German Expressionism and Art Deco — remains visually iconic and genuinely distinctive. However, the plot is relatively thin, sacrificing narrative depth for atmosphere and spectacle, and the climax atop the cathedral, while visually arresting, resolves somewhat abruptly and unsatisfyingly. Its novelty was enormous for its era, helping birth the modern blockbuster superhero film as a serious artistic proposition.
