The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)

Quartile rating: 6/10 · 1 rating

Balthazar Blake is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath. Balthazar can't do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler, a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness.

The Quartile Take

The Sorcerer's Apprentice is a serviceable but formulaic action-fantasy that leans heavily on familiar mentor-apprentice tropes and a generic good-versus-evil framework. The plot offers few surprises and recycles beats from countless similar films. Nicolas Cage brings his trademark eccentric energy which elevates the material somewhat, and Jay Baruchel is likable if unremarkable. Cinematography is competent blockbuster fare with decent New York location work but nothing visually distinctive. The film's novelty is low — despite the Fantasia inspiration, it plays as a by-the-numbers Disney live-action spectacle with little that feels singular. The climax and resolution are predictable and abrupt, wrapping up without much emotional payoff.
