Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Quartile rating: 8/10 · 1 rating

Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies.

The Quartile Take

Civil War is a commendable MCU entry that juggles a large ensemble with reasonable competence, grounding superhero conflict in genuine ideological tension rather than a cartoonish villain. The airport battle sequence is spectacularly choreographed and the Russo brothers keep the sprawling cast in check. However, the film is fundamentally a big-budget Marvel sequel operating within a well-established formula — its novelty is limited by franchise obligations and familiar genre mechanics. The ending, while emotionally charged, deflates somewhat by resolving the central conflict ambiguously without meaningful consequence, and the Zemo subplot feels undercooked. Acting is solid across the board but rarely transcends competent franchise work. Cinematography is polished but indistinct from MCU house style.
