A falsely accused nobleman survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him.
The 2016 Ben-Hur remake struggles to justify its existence alongside the iconic 1959 Charlton Heston version. The plot condenses and simplifies the source material, losing much of the epic gravitas. Acting is serviceable but lacks the charisma and weight needed for the material. The cinematography has some competent moments, particularly during the chariot race, which benefits from modern production values. Novelty is extremely low — this is a by-the-numbers remake of a beloved classic with little new perspective or voice to offer. The ending softens the vengeful arc toward reconciliation, which is earnest but feels rushed and unearned in this version.
