The Lego Ninjago Movie (2017)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

Six young ninjas are tasked with defending their island home of Ninjago. By night, they’re gifted warriors using their skill and awesome fleet of vehicles to fight villains and monsters. By day, they’re ordinary teens struggling against their greatest enemy....high school.

The Quartile Take

The Lego Ninjago Movie is the weakest entry in the Lego film series, suffering from a formulaic father-son reconciliation plot that feels recycled even within the franchise itself. The animation is visually competent and maintains the distinctive Lego brick aesthetic with some impressive action sequences, but lacks the inventive visual comedy of The Lego Movie. Voice acting is serviceable with a capable cast including Jackie Chan, but few performances stand out memorably. The film leans heavily on familiar martial arts tropes and teen-outcast storylines without finding a fresh angle, and the live-action framing device feels underutilized. The ending resolves predictably with emotional beats telegraphed well in advance, offering little surprise or resonance.
