Brothers addicted to speed at any price. Documentary following the motorcycle road racing careers, and fate, of the Dunlop family.
Road is a gripping sports documentary about the Dunlop family's obsession with motorcycle road racing in Northern Ireland. The cinematography is genuinely exceptional — capturing the terrifying speed and intimacy of road racing with stunning clarity and artistry, placing viewers right alongside the riders on narrow public roads. The subject matter is inherently compelling and the family tragedy adds emotional weight. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense, but the subjects' on-camera presence varies; some interviews are more naturalistic than others. The novelty is decent — road racing documentaries are rare and the Dunlop name is legendary in the sport, giving this a distinctive flavour, though it follows fairly conventional documentary structure. The ending carries emotional resonance given the real-world tragedy but stops short of being truly revelatory in its treatment.
