Don Champagne seems to have it all, but when his wife, Mona, learns of his affair with a pretty new salesgirl, she will stop at nothing to maintain their storybook life.
Home Sweet Hell is a dark suburban comedy-thriller with a familiar premise—controlling perfectionist wife takes murderous lengths to preserve appearances—that never quite transcends its generic bones. The plot recycles well-worn dark-comedy tropes about suburban hypocrisy without adding much new, and the execution is uneven, lurching between tones without fully committing. Katherine Heigl brings some commitment to the icy Mona, which elevates the acting slightly above the material, but the film struggles to make its satirical targets feel fresh. Cinematography is flat and functional, typical of mid-budget direct-to-VOD fare. The ending resolves predictably given the setup, offering little surprise or resonance. Overall a forgettable entry in the 'perfect suburban life gone wrong' subgenre.
