The Quartile Take

Cut Bank is a modest neo-noir thriller set in rural Montana that leans heavily on familiar Coen Brothers-esque small-town crime territory without fully distinguishing itself. The plot has reasonable twists but feels derivative of better films in the genre, with convenient coincidences undermining tension. The ensemble cast — including Liam Hemsworth, John Malkovich, and Billy Bob Thornton — delivers competent if uneven performances; Malkovich adds some color but the leads struggle to elevate thin material. Cinematography captures the bleak Montana landscape adequately but without memorable visual flair. Novelty is low given how closely it echoes established small-town noir templates. The ending resolves things in a fairly predictable, unsatisfying manner that fails to deliver on the setup's promise.
