Vampires and werewolves have waged a nocturnal war against each other for centuries. But all bets are off when a female vampire warrior named Selene, who's famous for her strength and werewolf-hunting prowess, becomes smitten with a peace-loving male werewolf, Michael, who wants to end the war.
Underworld carves out a distinctive gothic-industrial aesthetic with its blue-tinted Budapest underworld and leather-clad vampire warriors, giving it visual personality above the genre norm. The vampire-werewolf war mythology has some clever lore with the hybrid concept adding intrigue. However, the acting is uneven — Kate Beckinsale is committed but the supporting cast, particularly Scott Speedman, is wooden. The ending resolves the immediate conflict but feels rushed and incomplete, setting up franchise threads rather than delivering a satisfying standalone conclusion. The plot borrows heavily from noir and Romeo-and-Juliet frameworks without adding much beyond its genre mashup premise.
