The Quartile Take

Nicholas on Holiday is a pleasant but formulaic sequel to the charming original French adaptation of René Goscinny's beloved children's books. The plot is episodic and thin, stringing together mild seaside misadventures without much narrative momentum or surprise. The acting from the child cast retains some of the innocent charm of the first film, and the period 1960s aesthetic is competently rendered with warm, sun-drenched cinematography. However, as a sequel, it largely retreads familiar territory — the mischievous-child-in-a-new-setting formula offers little that wasn't already explored — making it derivative and low on novelty. The ending wraps up without much emotional payoff or memorability, feeling like a gentle fade rather than a satisfying conclusion.
