The Mummy (2017)

Quartile rating: 5/10 · 1 rating

Though safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.

The Quartile Take

The 2017 Mummy reboot is a deeply troubled blockbuster that prioritized franchise-building over storytelling. The plot is muddled, juggling a monster movie with a clumsy Dark Universe setup that never coheres. Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella try their best but are let down by a poorly written script that gives them little to work with. Cinematography is competent and serviceable for a big-budget production but nothing remarkable. Novelty is very low — it's a formulaic remake that feels derivative of better films and fails to carve out any distinctive identity, essentially recycling Universal Monster tropes without adding anything fresh. The ending is unsatisfying, leaving threads dangling for sequels that never materialized while failing to resolve its own story in a meaningful way.
