Avatar: Scene Deconstruction (2009)

The deconstruction of the Avatar scenes and sets

The Quartile Take

A behind-the-scenes documentary focused on the technical breakdown of Avatar's groundbreaking production. While the subject matter — the revolutionary virtual camera and performance capture work — is inherently fascinating given Avatar's landmark status, the documentary itself is fairly standard making-of fare. Cinematography earns above average for showcasing the innovative visual techniques being deconstructed. Novelty gets a bump from the unique nature of what's being documented rather than the documentary's own filmmaking. Plot and structure are minimal and conventional, and the ending lacks any particular resolution or payoff beyond wrapping up the technical tour.
