A masked maniac terrorizes the same small community where a murderer known as the Phantom Killer struck decades earlier.
The 2014 meta-sequel/remake attempts something genuinely interesting by setting its story in a town that obsessively screens the 1976 original film each year, blending reality and fiction in a self-aware way that gives it modest Novelty points. The cinematography has some effective atmosphere and tension-building in the bayou setting. However, the plot struggles to capitalize on its clever premise, devolving into fairly standard slasher mechanics, and the acting is serviceable but unremarkable. The ending fails to deliver satisfying payoff to the meta-narrative setup, leaving the film feeling like a missed opportunity despite its intriguing concept.
