A Good Marriage (2014)

Quartile rating: 5.5/10 · 1 rating

After 25 years of a good marriage, what will Darcy do once she discovers her husband's sinister secret?

The Quartile Take

This Stephen King adaptation follows a fairly predictable domestic thriller formula — a wife discovers her seemingly perfect husband is a serial killer, and the tension around whether she'll act or stay silent is familiar territory. The plot hits expected beats without much surprise. Acting is serviceable, with Joan Allen bringing some genuine weight to Darcy's internal conflict, elevating the material slightly. Cinematography is functional but unremarkable, fitting the suburban setting without any particular visual distinction. Novelty is low — the double-life serial killer thriller is well-worn ground, and this adaptation doesn't find a fresh angle on it. The ending resolves in a somewhat anticlimactic fashion that doesn't fully pay off the central tension it builds.
