Monkey Kingdom (2015)

Quartile rating: 7/10 · 1 rating

A newborn monkey and its mother struggle to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins found deep in the storied jungles of South Asia.

The Quartile Take

Monkey Kingdom is a Disneynature documentary with beautiful, lush cinematography capturing the ancient Sri Lankan ruins and jungle environments in vivid detail — the visual work is genuinely exceptional. The narrative follows Maya and her son Kip through the rigid social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, offering an emotionally engaging and accessible story arc. However, the anthropomorphized narration and Disney-formula storytelling make it feel somewhat formulaic within the nature documentary genre, limiting its novelty. Acting is not applicable in the traditional sense, scored low as narration (Tina Fey) is serviceable but leans heavily on cuteness. The ending provides satisfying resolution but follows a predictable uplifting arc typical of Disneynature films.
