The discovery of a massive river of ectoplasm and a resurgence of spectral activity allows the staff of Ghostbusters to revive the business.
Ghostbusters II is a serviceable but noticeably diminished follow-up to the original. The plot retreads familiar ground — the team disbands, reunites, faces a big supernatural threat in NYC — without adding meaningful new ideas beyond the slime gimmick and Vigo the Carpathian as a villain. The slime-as-mood-metaphor is mildly clever but underdeveloped. The cast remains charming and the ensemble chemistry is still a highlight, though the script gives them less to work with. Cinematography is competent blockbuster work, adequate but unremarkable. Novelty is low — it's a by-the-numbers sequel that recycles the structure and beats of the original without a distinctive new voice. The ending, featuring the Statue of Liberty as a deus ex machina powered by 'Good Feeling' music, is broadly entertaining but hollow and undercooked compared to the original's Marshmallow Man climax.
