Captain Marvel (2019)

Quartile rating: 6.5/10 · 1 rating

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Quartile Take

Captain Marvel is a competent but uneven MCU entry. The 1990s setting and amnesia-driven mystery structure offer some early intrigue, but the plot lacks strong momentum and the mid-section drags. Brie Larson delivers a capable performance and the supporting cast (Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn) adds genuine charm, but the hero's emotional arc feels underdeveloped. Visually it's serviceable MCU fare without distinctive cinematographic choices. The Skrull twist is a highlight for novelty within the genre, but the film otherwise follows a familiar origin-story template. The final act power-up and setup for Endgame provide a satisfying if somewhat unearned conclusion.
